I hope those of us, who plan to visit Hawaii in the near future, will have the Aloha Spirit unlike some tourists...

Been here since March14th, and when you are here reading the papers and the demonstrations against visitors, and wanting to restrict # of travelers to Island permanently even after the restrictions are lifted, and the hatred for tourists in all the opeds, I can see why some visitors have responded that way. At Marriott Maui Ocen club and they have shut down everything and beyond the stay at place order restrictions. , Obviously Mariott gets all their dues from all owners in January so they have all the money to fund everything for the full year, but are using this like any good stockholder company to pad their bottom line, sent all the workers home, keeping their newest lowered paid employess on the Job, and the long time employees are laid off. Only 16 people left at the entire resort, all the regular stuff shut down like all hotels , pools, spas etc. but we cant sit on the grass 100 feet from another person. Employees agree it is just to make money by having no staff :) I think there have been 2 or 3 deaths on maui to this point. And I think all have been from residents coming back from mainland. It certainly is interesting :)

Thanks for the report, Sean. I'm sorry you were caught in the middle of the quarantine. Let us know what the feeling is on if/when it will be lifted.

I think Sean arrived before the tourist lockdown. While he, and his family, are subject to the general stay at home order, they are not subject to the more stringent rules of not leaving their hotel room. Plus the tourist lockdown is only 14 days.

Gotta love the "rogue tourist" description for Sean, though. :D

Re: the article linked above:
Sensationalism at its worst. Article printed on May 7. Uses a photo from March 28.

Rogue tourists are "going to the beach" and "shopping". Thousands of them? Hundreds of them? This article names* 4 - 5, and says there were 20 statewide, presumably between March 26 and May 7.
Shopping where? What's open? A restaurant? Loading groceries from Costco? Both of those purchases help the economy.

https://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/new ... egins.html

* "Speaking of bloody-minded moves, the Covid-19 task force continues to name and shame tourists who get arrested for violating the two-week curfew during their Hawaii vacation, sending the media their mugshots and full names. For what? What are we supposed to do with this information? Is this an incitement to abuse them in the streets? Pelt them with tomatoes? What is the end game here?"

we were there, so no big deal, read maui news for updates, there is a very large anti tourist bent, now that all the cars in the rental fleets have filled all the fields outside the airports, it is a huge visual of the tourist industry, they are starting to open, but locals in no way can sustain very many stores and restaurants. we know a lot of locals and they dont go to the restaurants very often at all, cant afford it, so without tourists any opening really doesnt solve much. I am betting each death on hawaii has cost maybe 10s of millions of dollars Million dollars, very interesting "existence vs quality of life" debate going on.

A lot about what you see on the news about Hawaii paying to send you back home is, like most news stories now days, stretched and when it comes down too it lacks much truth. What is really going on, and in my opinion it's about time, is they are taking advantage of the closures and things to stop the arriving homeless transients. Hopefully this can allow them to work on the current homeless problem and now not have to worry about the ever increasing arrivals.

I have family on 3 islands, they say the lack of tourism is catastrophic in Hawaii. Most Hawaiians want tourism back so they can go back to work. You will always have a few that are against it, always have always will.

Homeless, in San Francisco, can get free hotel room, free food, free drugs and free alcohol. They wonder why we have a homeless problem. Everyone wants to come here.

It is absolutely insane. They used to give free needles, now they're doing door to door delivery of drugs/alcohol.

City council in SF and LA both threatened hotels that wouldn't "welcome" the homeless into their rooms. First with "shaming" and then with some sort of government take over.

San Francisco is spending $30,000 per day for empty rooms. The rooms were for medical staff that needed to fly in to handle the surge, that luckily has not shown up.

¿Just wonder what all this discussion about LA, SF, Homeless, etc has to do with Aloha Spirit?

A reasonable question. Order, order in the forum! Everyone back on topic or a Mod will likely move this discussion to The Clubhouse. :)
Strange things happen while on lock-down at home.

Hawaii is exporting their homeless by giving them plane tickets. Maybe to San Francisco.
